How we write our guides

The Backyard Field Guide is written by the team behind Backyard Birdcam, a small online shop that sells a solar bird feeder with a built-in camera. We write about the questions people who feed birds actually ask: which birds come to feeders, what to feed them, how to keep squirrels and pests away, how to tell look-alike birds apart, and how to get a good view of your visitors.

How the guides are made

Our guides are written with the help of AI writing tools. We stick to well-established, widely documented birding knowledge, and where something depends on your region or the season we say so. We do not invent statistics, reviews, testimonials or expert quotes, and we do not pretend to be people we are not: every guide is signed by the Backyard Birdcam team.

About the pictures

The pictures in our guides are computer-rendered illustrations, not photographs of real birds and not footage from any camera. Each one is labeled as an illustration. For identification, compare what you see with a regional field guide or a bird identification app.

When we mention our shop

Every guide shows a small box labeled “From our shop” that points to the feeder camera we sell. That is the only product we sell, and the guides are written to be useful whether or not you buy anything.
